Night Beats Interview on SuperSonicSounds

Have you ever experienced this? You’re listening to this new record by a band you’ve recently discovered, then somebody comes into the room and asks you “Hey, what old 60s record have you dug up again now?” That’s what happened to me and what might happen to you if it is Night Beats’ new record Who Sold My Generation (the question mark is left out intentionally as you might discover if you read on) playing. Drenched in droning guitars and with rhythms that want to make you dance like a character from your favourite Tarantino movie, the music composed by these three lads from Seattle certainly gets your retro groove on. However, with their very distinctive own, fresh tinge added to it, Who Sold My Generation might not only be a question, but also the answer, granted that you’ve been asking yourself if there’s any great music coming out in this day and age. Before their gig in Cologne I talked to Lee and Jakob about musical influences, their cooperation with Robert Been (BRMC) and guitar mysteries.

Wolf Alice Interview on SuperSonicSounds

After publishing several EPs, 2015 was the year in which their ever so fondly growing fanbase finally saw the release of Wolf Alice’s full album-length debut, My Love Is Cool. The four-piece who hail from North London might probably have surprised shallow critics claiming they were just some 90s revival band by providing a very diverse long-player, featuring such songs that master the balancing act between haunting beauty (Turn To Dust), a poppy attitude (Freazy) and good old rock (Giant Peach). Now being nominated for several awards (e.g. a Brit Award and several NME Awards to name a few), Wolf Alice have certainly reached a crossroads in their career that might catapult them into the centre of even more attention. While in Cologne, Joff Oddie (guitar) gave an insight into what he and his bandmates Ellie Rowsell (vocals, guitar), Theo Ellis (bass) and Joel Amey (drums) have been up to lately.

Editors Interview

When Editors’ debut The Back Room finally touched down on the shelves of record stores in 2005, it won over critics and fans with its distinct sound and Tom Smith’s remarkable voice, and even received a Mercury Prize nomination. A couple of records and some changes in the band set-up later, The Weight of Your Love came across as a rather traditional rock album, expressing a stark contrast to the band’s earlier work. With their latest oeuvre, In Dream, they return to their roots by featuring layers of synthesizers and move away from a traditional song set. Whereas critics find fault with a supposed lack of highlights on this album, one could claim that instead of using a run-of-the-mine approach of reproducing the success of The Weight of Your Love, letting the tunes on In Dream unfold results in the listener discovering a quite unique musical landscape. While in Cologne, I talked to Ed Lay and Elliot Williams about recording in Scotland, the possibility of Editors making a German rap album, and their collaboration with artist Rahi Rezvani.

Ten years of Howl - Exclusive interview with Robert Levon Been of BRMC for SuperSonicSounds

Do you remember where you were in 2005? What you were doing? Who you were seeing? Even if you don’t remember that, if you’re into music at all, you will most likely remember what you were listening to in 2005. There were so many great albums being thrown on the market, bands who are still around ten years later experiencing their first success, and Indie dancefloors filled with people eager to dance the night through, celebrating this soundtrack of their generation.

BRMC, however, had already had their breakthrough, being praised to the skies by the press for their debut that came out in 2001. Four years later though, the tide had turned, their contract had been lost, just like their drummer, and retrospectively the band was now reaching the big crossroads in their career. Having left flat by their record company they now had to make decisions that would mark the birth of a record that so many people have come to love, a record that stood out and has stayed with us. Howl was born.

"Within the confines of an old farmhouse in Switzerland, Andrin Berchtold and Gian Reto Camenisch create warm, embracing pop music as From Kid. Graceful harmonies. Shimmering guitars. Songs in two voices. Slightly melancholic with a feathery understatement. Following the success of their debut album ‘You Can Have All The Wonders’, pop duo FROM KID have released a new Live Session of their song ‘Itself‘ on Youtube.”

I got a bit nostalgic tonight and figured I hadn't published the old BRMC interviews I had salvaged before Popzine, the magazine I started doing interviews for initially, was taken down.

Anyway, if you feel like browsing some old stuff, all five interviews are online on www.supersonicsounds.de now.

BRMC Interview

There are people whose lives cannot do without the “right” amount of drama, and sometimes this tendency accumulates when it comes to bands. BRMC are certainly one of them, having suffered several strokes of fate throughout their now almost 15-year-old career. Distributed over the making of six albums so far, they had to endure problems within their lineup, losing their record deal, and most gravely Michael Been’s sudden demise five years ago. But Robert Been, Peter Hayes and, since 2008, Leah Shapiro, have always found their way onto their feet again. Until last year, when fate struck again and Leah was diagnosed with chiari malformations, a condition of the brain that threatened her supposed purpose in life, not knowing whether she’d ever be able to play the drums again. A serious brain operation, a heart-rending fund-raising campaign, and six months of physiotherapy later, however, BRMC have successfully outperformed another stroke of fate, flipping destiny the bird and, instead of taking more time off, releasing a Live DVD / album and touring Europe for the summer.

I meet Robert Been in Amsterdam’s picturesque Paradiso, which seems to have become their mandatory venue to play at in the Netherlands’ capital, and we talk about said struggle, their recent tour and release, and very many more things.
